Parsha

A Parsha or Parshah, meaning "Portion", is the name given to the weekly Torah reading or portion that is used in the Synagogue on the Sabbath. The Torah Reading is divided into 7 sections. Each section is called an Aliya (literally, Go up) since for each Aliya, one person "goes up" to make a bracha [blessing] on the Torah Reading and proceeds with the reading.  The reading is not done with out the blessing.

The following is a table of the weekly Torah portions.  The Parsha are known by their names rather than their chapter and verse designation. The numbering scheme is a later addition and varies somewhat between the Hebrew and English.  It is also common to see Torah references given as 3 numbers:  Genesis 1:1 is sometimes written 1:1:1.  The Prasha name comes from the first words of the portion.  Bereishis is the name of the book of Genesis in Hebrew and means beginning it is also the name of the first portion as well as the first word of the parsha.  The parsha begins Bereishis bara Elohim, rendered in English "In the beginning God."  Also note that the Hebrew name of the book is also the name of the first Parsha.  Looking through the list there are a few that might look familiar even without some Hebrew for example: Noach is the story of Noah; Chayei Sarah is the death of Sarah; Korach is Korah's rebellion; and Balak is the story of Balak, Balaam and his donkey.
